Well, I'd say that mid-May is just about the end of early 2011, so this is officially late. Shame, because it's a nice idea, and works well in other transport networks -- as the comments below show, at least in Brighton and Edinburgh. The late arrival shows that it's wise never to underestimate the difficulty of integration with legacy systems.

This story from San Diego shows that even in the public transport desert that is the US, they can make this sort of thing work. Not all TFL's fault - lots of legacy systems developed in silos don't play well with the more recent web development world.
