The Mobile Millenium project

Based in California at Berkeley, involves using mobile devices as sensors for traffic flow. Nokia, its subsidiary NavTeq and others are involved.

Am I missing something, or isn't this just what TomTom and Vodafone do as a live commercial service?

This is more complex - involves GPS, and sending traffic data back to the participating devices - but not obviously better.
