The partnership between Cisco and AGT International reported earlier on this blog is beginning to bear fruit, as indicated by this announcement about a “smart port” pilot project for the City of Hamburg.
The initial deployment focuses on process optimisation – truck parking, traffic management, infrastructure monitoring and efficient street lighting - rather than new citizen-facing services or new business models. I don't have a problem with that at all; doing this stuff is hard enough already without putting in solutions that require new kinds of behaviour or requiring revenue-based business cases.
I note in passing that Cisco and its partner AGT seem to have notched up an early win when the widely-reported IBM-Deutsche Telekom partnership, which was announced with much fanfare at MWC in 2013 ,doesn't seem to have had much to report thus far.
