As described in this announcement on the Google Mobile Blog. Apparently shares in manufacturers of dedicated personal navigation devices have 'tumbled'.
I suspect TomTom's shares will recover. A personal navigation device is cheaper than a smartphone, and the GPS will perform better, and the battery won't run down so quickly. But I do look forward to trying the app on my G1, when it's back from the menders.
