Two websites designed to help hitch-hikers - Digihitch and Hitchwiki. Digihitch has a decent tool which lets you search for offered rides (and offer rides, of course). The only one I could find from the UK was going from Nottingham to Vladivostock, which made me go all misty for a moment...
